AC Fan Won't Turn On: Start With the Basics
Before calling a technician, work through the most common reasons an AC fan fails to start. The problem usually sits in one of a few predictable places: power delivery, thermostat settings, internal safety switches, or worn electrical components. Start by confirming the unit is receiving power. Check the breaker panel for a tripped switch and reset it if needed. Then inspect the indoor and outdoor disconnect switches — both must be in the ON position. On the outdoor condenser, look for a float switch near the base; if it has tripped, the unit will refuse to run the fan until the water level drops.
Thermostat and Control Board Issues
A misconfigured thermostat is one of the simplest explanations for a fan that won't turn on. Verify the setpoint is below room temperature and the mode is set to COOL, not AUTO or OFF. If the display is blank, replace the batteries or check for a tripped low-voltage fuse inside the thermostat.
If the thermostat reads correctly but the fan still doesn't respond, the issue may be a faulty control board. The board relays voltage to the fan motor, and a burned trace or failed relay will break that circuit. You can test this by jumping R to Y at the thermostat — if the outdoor unit comes on but the fan stays still, the control board is likely the culprit.
Capacitor Failure in AC Fans
The run capacitor and start capacitor provide the electrical boost the fan motor needs to spin. A failed capacitor is one of the most frequent reasons an AC fan won't turn on, especially in units that are several years old.

If the capacitors test fine, the motor itself may have burned out. Signs include a burning smell, visible scorch marks, or grinding noises when the unit attempts to start. Overheating from blocked airflow — a dirty filter, clogged coils, or debris around the outdoor unit — accelerates motor wear.
Inspect the wiring between the control board and the fan motor for loose connections, corrosion, or rodent damage. A broken wire in the harness will prevent voltage from reaching the motor even if every other component is working correctly.
When to Call a Professional
Some fan failures require specialized tools and knowledge. If the problem points to a control board, a hard-start capacitor, or an internal wiring fault, it's time to schedule a service call. A technician can safely diagnose the root cause and replace parts without risking further damage to the system.
