- Control board failure — The board that governs the outdoor unit may fail to send the signal to engage the fan.
- Low refrigerant or pressure lockout — Some units will disable the fan if pressure sensors detect a fault, which can also be a symptom of a refrigerant leak.

Before calling a technician, run through a few safe checks. First, verify the circuit breaker has not tripped and that the outdoor disconnect switch is in the on position. Next, remove the outer panel and look for obvious debris, leaves, or a bent fan blade. Visually inspect the capacitor for bulging or leaking. If the fan spins freely by hand and the motor hums but does not start, the capacitor is a likely suspect. If the motor is completely silent, suspect power delivery, a bad relay, or a failed motor winding.
