The risk comes from overlapping ingredients, particularly antihistamines and acetaminophen, which can lead to accidental overdose or increased drowsiness if not monitored.

Why Ingredient Overlap Matters

The main concern with mixing any two over-the-counter products is duplicate active ingredients. Many Nyquil formulations contain doxylamine succinate, a sedating antihistamine, along with acetaminophen and a cough suppressant like dextromethorphan. Claritin contains loratadine, which is chemically different from doxylamine and is less likely to cause extreme drowsiness.
