Herbicide-tolerant crops have, in some regions, led to heavier reliance on glyphosate, which has its own ecological and weed-resistance concerns. Organic foods typically cost more, driven by more labor-intensive practices, lower yields, and the expense of certification. GMO crops can keep consumer prices lower, particularly for staples like corn, soy, and sugar beets that underpin processed foods. For lower-income households, the price gap matters. If the choice is between conventional GMO staples and no fresh produce at all, the evidence favors eating what is affordable and available. The nutritional benefits of a diet rich in fruits and vegetables outweigh the theoretical risks of pesticide residues or GMO status for most people.

Choosing Between Them

Consumers who want to avoid GMOs can look for the USDA Organic label or the Non-GMO Project Verified seal, though organic certification is the more enforceable standard. Those prioritizing reduced pesticide exposure should wash produce thoroughly and consider the "Dirty Dozen" and "Clean Fifteen" lists when budget is limited. Neither GMO nor organic is a single monolith — a GMO soybean grown with conservation tillage and an organic soybean grown on cleared rainforest land represent very different environmental stories.

The most practical path is to focus on the whole diet rather than single ingredients. Eating more plants, less processed food, and a variety of both conventional and organic options, where affordable, will likely do more for long-term health than fixating on any single label.
