How Cable TV Works
Cable TV works by sending television signals through coaxial or fiber-optic lines from a provider's headend to a box or tuner in your home. The headend receives broadcast and satellite feeds, encrypts and packages them, then pushes them over the cable plant. Your cable box or TV tuner decodes the signal so you can watch live channels, on-demand content, and recorded programs.

The Signal Path
At the headend, incoming signals are processed, mixed, and assigned to specific frequency ranges. A headend can handle thousands of channels by using frequency division multiplexing, where each channel occupies a narrow slice of the spectrum. The combined signal travels over a hybrid fiber-coaxial network, with fiber carrying the bulk of the data long distances and coaxial cables making the final connection to your house.

How Channels Are Delivered
Each channel is assigned a frequency slot. When you select a channel, the box tunes to that frequency and extracts the video and audio streams. Digital cable uses QAM modulation to pack multiple channels into each frequency slot, which is why modern systems can carry hundreds of channels on a single coaxial line.
Analog vs Digital and Encryption
Older analog cable transmitted unencrypted baseband signals, but most systems now use digital transmission with encryption (DVB-C or SCTE standards). Encryption lets providers control access, offer on-demand libraries, and support two-way communication for interactive features like video on demand and billing.
