Each strip has an internal spring-like band that acts as a gentle lever. When the adhesive attaches to the skin, the band tries to straighten. Because it is fixed at the ends, this force pushes the sides of the nose outward. This expansion reduces the resistance inside the nasal valve, the narrowest part of the airway, allowing air to flow more freely.
What Nasal Strips Can and Cannot Do
By reducing nasal valve resistance, strips can help decrease the feeling of congestion and may reduce snoring caused by nasal obstruction. However, they do not treat the underlying cause of congestion from a cold, allergies, or a deviated septum. They also do not cure sleep apnea, though they may ease nasal breathing for some mild cases.
How to Use Nasal Strips Effectively
For best results, apply the strip to clean, dry skin across the bridge of the nose, just above the flare of the nostrils. The strip should be centered and pressed firmly so the adhesive holds. The band should feel taut but not painful. A properly placed strip will gently lift the skin, creating a visible widening of the nasal opening.
Limitations and Considerations
Nasal strips are a drug-free, external option, but they are not a permanent solution. The adhesive can irritate sensitive skin, and the effect lasts only while the strip is worn. People with certain skin conditions or allergies to adhesives should avoid them. For chronic nasal blockage, consulting a healthcare provider is recommended to address the root cause rather than relying solely on external strips.
