How Tesla Drives Itself
Tesla's Full Self-Driving (FSD) system steers, accelerates, and brakes largely on its own using a stack of cameras, neural networks, and real-time mapping, but it still requires a human to supervise. The system is not a robotaxi product you can sleep through; it is a driver-assistance suite that handles lane changes, highway interchanges, and some city streets under strict conditions.

The Hardware That Sees the Road
Tesla relies on eight surround cameras and forward-facing sensors to build a view of the environment, feeding that stream into custom-built neural networks. These networks identify lanes, traffic lights, stop signs, pedestrians, and other vehicles, then predict how those objects will move seconds into the future. The process runs on Tesla's in-house Full Self-Driving computer, which processes video frames in real time without relying on lidar or high-definition maps.
The Software Logic Behind the Wheel
The software uses a planning and control stack that generates a driving policy: when to change lanes, how to corner, and when to slow down for hazards. Tesla updates this policy through fleet learning, where anonymized data from thousands of cars is used to train newer versions of the model. FSD Beta, Supervised, and the latest FSD V12/V13 iterations progressively shift more of that decision-making to neural-network-based end-to-end models, moving away from hand-coded rules.
Driver Responsibility and Monitoring
A driver must keep their hands on the wheel and attention on the road. Tesla uses a cabin camera and torque sensors to detect inattention; if the system flags a lapse, it escalates alerts and eventually slows the car and pulls over. Autosteer and Navigate on Autopilot are available on highways with clear lane markings, while city street driving in FSD Beta is a more limited rollout that varies by region and software version.
What Tesla Cannot Do Yet
The system still struggles with unusual intersections, construction zones, emergency vehicles, and complex unprotected left turns. It cannot legally operate as a driverless ride-hail service in most places, and regulatory bodies in multiple countries continue to audit its claims. Drivers should treat every FSD engagement as a supervised feature, not a replacement for attentive control.
