Start With Your Free Reports

You cannot fix what you do not see. Pull your reports from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com and read every line. Look for accounts you do not recognize, late payments that are older than seven years, collections that were paid but still show as unpaid, and any negative item that belongs to someone with a similar name or Social Security number.

Dispute Anything That Is Wrong

Send a written dispute to the bureau that listed the error and to the company that reported it. State the account name, what is incorrect, and why, and attach copies of your proof. The bureau has 30 days to investigate, and if the furnisher cannot verify the item, it must be removed. Follow up in writing and keep a log of every call, date and name.

Bring Delinquent Accounts Current

Late payments hurt your score the most when they are recent. Call creditors to ask for a goodwill adjustment if you have a solid payment history, and negotiate a pay-for-delete letter before you settle a collection. Getting current on revolving accounts matters more than paying off old, closed ones in the short term.

Lower Your Credit Utilization

Your utilization ratio is the second biggest scoring factor. Keep balances below 10 percent of each card's limit, and pay before the statement closes so the reported balance stays low. If you cannot pay in full, request a credit limit increase or use a small balance transfer, but do not open several new cards at once.

Stop New Damage Immediately

Set up autopay for at least the minimum on every account, and put every bill that is not automatic on a calendar reminder. Avoid new hard inquiries by limiting applications for credit. If you are overwhelmed, a nonprofit credit counselor can build a debt management plan that consolidates payments without costing you extra interest.

What Improves Most Quickly

Not all fixes take the same time. Removing a single late payment or a collection account can raise your score within 30 to 45 days, while lowering utilization shows up the same month. Waiting out old negatives is the slowest path; disputes and balance paydowns work faster.
