Next, locate your home's electrical panel and inspect the breaker for the outdoor condenser and indoor air handler. A tripped breaker is a common cause of a complete system failure. If the breaker trips again after you reset it, stop and call a professional, as this signals a deeper electrical issue.
Replace the Air Filter and Inspect the Vents
A clogged filter restricts airflow and can cause the evaporator coil to freeze, leading to warm air or a system that shuts off prematurely. Remove the filter and hold it up to a light source; if you cannot see through it, replace it. While you are at it, ensure all supply and return vents are open and unobstructed by furniture or curtains, as blocked vents create pressure imbalances that reduce cooling efficiency.
Clear the Condensate Drain and Outdoor Unit
Find the PVC drain pipe near your indoor unit and pour a cup of distilled white vinegar into it to clear algae or mold buildup. A clogged drain will trigger a safety shut-off. Outside, inspect the condenser unit for debris like leaves, grass clippings, or dirt packed against the fins. Use a garden hose on a gentle setting to rinse the fins from the inside out, being careful not to bend them. Straighten any crushed fins with a fin comb to restore proper airflow.

If the system blows warm air after these steps, makes unusual grinding or squealing noises, or leaks fluid, the problem likely requires a licensed HVAC technician. Possible issues include a refrigerant leak, a faulty compressor, or a failing capacitor.
