Check Whether the Review Violates Google's Policies
Before taking action, confirm the review breaks Google's review policy. Google removes reviews that contain hate speech, threats, spam, promotional content, or personal information such as a phone number or email address. A negative review that is simply critical, even harsh, is generally not eligible for removal on policy grounds alone. Read the full text and note which policy, if any, appears to be violated.

Report the Review Through Google's Tools
If the review clearly violates policy, flag it for removal. On desktop, open Google Maps, locate the business listing, and scroll to the review. Click the three-dot menu and select "Report review." On the mobile app, tap the review, then the flag icon. Choose the reason that best fits, such as "Harassment" or "Spam." Google reviews these flags and may remove the review if it breaches guidelines. There is no guaranteed timeline for this process.
Use the Removals Form for Serious Cases
For reviews that contain explicit threats, sexually explicit content, or personally identifying information, Google provides a dedicated legal or policy removals request form. This is the same tool used for copyright or defamation claims. You will need to provide the review URL and a justification that the content violates Google's terms. This form is more rigorous than the simple flag and is best suited for clear-cut violations.
Respond to the Review Publicly
Even if you cannot remove a review, a professional public response matters. A calm, factual reply shows future customers that you take feedback seriously. Restate the issue, avoid defending or attacking the reviewer, and offer to resolve the matter offline. This response is visible to anyone reading the review and can mitigate damage without the review being deleted.
When Removal Is Not Possible
Google will not remove reviews just because they are negative, unfair, or based on a dispute with the business owner. If a reviewer describes a genuine experience, even inaccurately, it typically stays. In that case, focus on collecting more positive reviews from satisfied customers to dilute the impact. You can also ask Google to hide a review if it is flagged as fake by enough users, but there is no direct "dispute" button for reviewers who disagree with the facts.
Prevent Future Negative Reviews
The strongest long-term approach is proactive review management. Encourage happy customers to leave Google reviews by using follow-up emails or signage. Monitor your listings regularly so you can flag policy violations early. Keep your business information accurate and your customer service consistent, which reduces the likelihood of negative experiences turning into public complaints.
