Setting Up the Text Layer

Set your color to a mid-tone gray rather than black, since the final look depends on the materials you apply later. Adjusting the 3D Properties

Once the extrusion is created, the 3D panel and Properties panel become active. Use the Properties panel to control the extrusion depth, which determines how thick the text appears in space. You can also bevel the front and back faces, adding rounded or chamfered edges that give the type a more polished, physical feel. Switch to the 3D panel to reposition the text, rotate it on any axis, or move it closer to or farther from the ground plane.

Applying Materials and Lighting

Materials control how the surface looks. In the Properties panel, click the Material tab and choose from preset options like Glass, Chrome, or Plastic, or build a custom material by adjusting diffuse color, specular highlights, and shininess. Add a spot light or an infinite light through the 3D panel to cast shadows and create highlights on the extruded faces. Moving the light changes the mood — a single strong light from above gives drama, while two softer lights produce a cleaner, editorial look.

Rendering and Exporting

When the composition looks right, click Render in the 3D panel. Photoshop calculates the final lighting, shadows, and reflections, which can take several minutes depending on your system. After rendering, save a layered PSD to preserve the 3D data for future edits, and export a flattened PNG or JPEG for use in social media, presentations, or web graphics. You can also use File > Export > Render to Video if you want a rotating 3D text animation.
