How to Make a Bed Firmer on One Side
Uneven firmness on one side of the bed often comes from body impressions, worn support, or a foundation that has shifted. You can restore balance with a few targeted fixes that address the mattress, the base, and the bedding itself.

Check the Foundation and Base
A box spring, slatted frame, or platform that sags on one side will let the mattress sink unevenly. Inspect the legs, center support, and slats for damage or looseness. Replace any broken slats, add a center beam, or use a firmer foundation to restore even support across the full width of the bed.
Adjust or Rotate the Mattress
Memory foam and innerspring mattresses develop body impressions over time. If the mattress is double-sided, rotate it 180 degrees so the softer side faces up on the firmer edge, or flip it entirely. For single-sided models, rotate end-to-end to redistribute wear. Add a firm mattress topper on the softer side to lift the surface back toward even firmness.
Add Support Under the Softer Side
Place a piece of plywood or a firm mattress board between the mattress and the box spring on the saggy side. This creates a stable base that prevents further dipping. Alternatively, a folded blanket or dense foam pad under the mattress edge can add temporary, adjustable firmness without replacing the entire bed.
Consider Bedding and Frame Adjustments
- Use a firmer pillow or a contoured pillow on the softer side to change how the head and shoulder sink.
- Check the bed frame for loose bolts or a warped headboard rail that pulls one side down.
- Replace a worn, sagging mattress pad or topper that has compacted on one side.
When to Replace Instead of Repair
If the mattress has a permanent dip deeper than two inches, coils are poking through, or the foundation is heavily damaged, repair efforts will only be temporary. A new mattress or a replacement foundation may be the most effective long-term solution for one-sided softness.
