Verify Your iCloud Backup Is Current

Open the Settings app, tap your name, then tap iCloud and choose iCloud Backup. If the toggle is on, the last backup date should appear directly beneath it. For a complete backup, that date should be today or very recent. If it is older, tap Back Up Now and stay on the same Wi-Fi network until it finishes.

Confirm All Data Types Are Included

iCloud Backup automatically saves most system settings, app data, messages, photos, and device settings, but some items need separate attention. Check that Photos is enabled under iCloud so your library syncs beyond what a device-only backup holds. For notes, contacts, and calendars, verify each is toggled on in iCloud settings so they live in the cloud independently of a backup.

Check Storage and Device Limits

Open Settings, tap your name, then iCloud to see how much storage is used and how much remains. A backup will pause if you run out of space, leaving recent data unprotected. You can manage storage by reviewing large attachments in Messages, deleting old backups from devices you no longer use, or upgrading your iCloud storage plan if needed.

Review Backup Settings Across Devices

Each Apple device backs up separately, so repeat the same check on every iPhone, iPad, or Mac that matters to you. On a Mac, go to System Settings, click your Apple ID, then iCloud and iCloud Drive to ensure desktop and documents folders are included. For Apple Watch, confirm that watches are set to back up automatically when the paired iPhone does.

Test a Restore to Build Confidence

The only way to know a backup works is to restore from it. Erase a device or set up a new one and choose Restore from iCloud Backup, selecting the most recent one. Verify that apps, photos, and settings reappear as expected. If something is missing, check whether that data type was excluded from backup or whether the backup itself was incomplete before trusting it for disaster recovery.
