Measure Everything Before You Lift

A sofa move starts long before anyone touches the furniture. Measure the sofa's width, height, and depth, then measure every doorway, hallway, turn, and stairwell it must pass through. Note ceiling heights if the sofa is a sectional or has a tall back. Write these numbers down and compare them; a difference of even two inches can mean the difference between a smooth move and a stuck sofa.

Remove all detachable parts first. Take off armrests, legs, cushions, and any loose back panels. This reduces weight and prevents snagging. If a piece is too heavy or awkward to remove alone, a second person makes the task safer.

Protect Your Home and the Sofa

Hard floors scratch easily, and door frames dent. Lay down moving blankets, cardboard, or old sheets along the entire path the sofa will travel. Use furniture sliders under the sofa's base if it has legs, or lift it onto a moving blanket dolly for heavier units.

Wrap the sofa in moving blankets and secure them with stretch wrap or tape. This prevents scuffs on the fabric and protects corners from bumping into walls. For leather sofas, add a layer of padding to avoid surface cracks from pressure or friction.

Lifting and Maneuvering Techniques

Never drag a sofa across the floor. Dragging stresses the frame, stretches the fabric, and damages hardwood or tile. Instead, tilt the sofa onto its side and carry it with the strongest person leading and the other guiding the back end.

Keep the sofa level when navigating doorways. A tilted angle can catch a frame on a jamb. If you must pivot, move the sofa's center of gravity slowly and communicate clearly with anyone helping you.

When to Use a Dolly or Hand Truck

A furniture dolly spreads the weight across a larger area and keeps the sofa off the floor. Secure the sofa with straps so it cannot shift during transport. For staircases, a stair-climbing dolly reduces the risk of dropping the piece or straining your back.

Disassemble If Necessary

Some sofas, especially larger sectionals, are designed to break down into smaller units. Check if your model has removable seat sections or a split back. Moving these pieces individually is often easier than forcing a full assembly through a tight space.

Keep all screws, bolts, and small parts in a labeled bag taped to one of the pieces. Reassembly will be faster and you will not lose hardware.

Loading and Transporting the Sofa

When loading the sofa into a truck, place it upright against the wall with heavier items in front to prevent shifting. If the sofa must lie flat, make sure nothing heavy sits on top of it, as this can warp the frame or damage the suspension.

Secure the sofa with ratchet straps tied to anchor points in the truck bed. A sofa that slides during transport can scratch the truck lining or crash into other items.

Know When to Call Professionals

Some sofa moves are simply too risky to DIY. If the sofa is oversized, antique, or made of delicate material, professional movers have the equipment and experience to handle it safely.
