Move an image in Photoshop using the Move tool
To move an image in Photoshop, select the layer containing the image in the Layers panel, choose the Move tool from the toolbar (or press V), and drag the image to its new position. The Move tool is the primary way to reposition layers, selections, or entire compositions, and it works on both raster and smart object layers. Fine-tuning placement
For pixel-precise adjustments, use the arrow keys on your keyboard to nudge the selected layer. Holding Shift with an arrow key moves the layer in larger 10-pixel increments. You can also enter exact coordinates in the Move tool options bar to position the layer relative to the canvas origin.
Moving selections and masked areas
If you have made a selection with any lasso, marquee, or magic wand tool, the Move tool will only reposition the selected pixels. To move a masked layer without affecting the mask, make sure the layer mask thumbnail is not active in the Layers panel; click the layer itself. Holding Alt (Windows) or Option (Mac) while dragging a layer creates a copy at the new position, which is useful for duplicating elements without leaving the Move tool.
Moving images between documents
To move an image from one Photoshop file to another, open both documents, select the Move tool, and drag the layer from one canvas to the other. Alternatively, use the Copy and Paste commands (Ctrl+C / Cmd+C, then Ctrl+V / Cmd+V). When pasting between documents of different resolutions, Photoshop automatically scales the pasted layer; you can turn off this behavior in the General Preferences under Scale Stylized Layers When Pasting.

Common issues and fixes
