How to Read Heikin Ashi Candles

Heikin Ashi candles modify traditional price data using averages, which makes trends easier to spot and false breakouts less likely. Once you understand the formula behind each candle, you can read the chart faster and with fewer emotional reactions to wicks and small bodies.

The Heikin Ashi Formula

Each candle uses four calculated values instead of the raw open, high, low, close:

  • Close = (Open + High + Low + Close) / 4
  • Open = (Previous Open + Previous Close) / 2
  • High = max of High, Open, Close
  • Low = min of Low, Open, Close

Because the open is an average of the prior candle and the close is an average of all four prices, the candles move more smoothly than standard candlesticks.

Candle Shapes and What They Mean

The color and body of a Heikin Ashi candle carry the signal:

  • Green (or hollow) candle with no lower wick signals strong bullish momentum.
  • Red (or filled) candle with no upper wick signals strong bearish momentum.
  • Small body and long wicks indicate a pause or potential trend reversal.
  • Doji-like candles where the body is tiny often mark indecision at turning points.

Reading the Trend

A sustained run of green candles with progressively larger bodies confirms an uptrend; a run of red candles with growing bodies confirms a downtrend. When the candles begin to change color or shrink, the trend is weakening. Traders use this to stay in a move longer and avoid exiting on routine pullbacks.

Limitations to Keep in Mind

Because Heikin Ashi smooths data, it lags behind actual price action. The chart can hide sharp intraday spikes and wicks that matter for scalpers or stop placement. Use Heikin Ashi for trend identification and timeframes above the one-minute chart, and pair it with raw price candles or volume for entry and exit decisions.
