How to Remove a Bird from Your House

Removing a bird from your house works best when you stay calm, move slowly, and give the bird a clear path to the exit. Close doors to other rooms, open windows and exterior doors wide, and turn off ceiling fans so the air stays still. These steps let the bird find the daylight on its own, which is safer for both you and the bird than a chase.

Prepare the Room

Before you approach, remove pets from the area and close interior doors so the bird cannot fly deeper into the house. Check that window screens are secure, or remove a screen if needed, so the exit is wide open. Dim the lights inside and brighten the outdoor exit by opening curtains or turning on a porch light; birds often move toward brighter openings.

Guide the Bird Out

Stand still for a moment so the bird can orient itself. If it stays low, use a large towel or pillowcase held gently in front of you to slowly corner the bird against a wall or ceiling. Keep your movements smooth and avoid sudden swipes. When the bird flies, direct it toward the open window or door with slow hand motions, not loud noises or rapid chasing.

When to Call for Help

If the bird is injured, trapped, or exhausted, stop the process and contact a local wildlife rehabilitator or animal control.
