To remove an ink cartridge from an HP printer, first confirm the printer is idle and then power it off using the Power button. Locate and release the cartridge
Once the lid is open, look for the cartridge carriage, a horizontal bar holding the ink cartridges. If the carriage is parked in the center, gently slide it to one side to expose the cartridges. Each cartridge sits in a color-coded slot and is held by a small plastic clip or latch. Press the clip inward or lift the latch, then pull the cartridge straight out at the same angle it was inserted to avoid spilling ink.
Handle the old cartridge carefully
Hold the cartridge by its plastic sides and avoid touching the copper contacts or the ink nozzle, which is the small opening at the bottom. Place the removed cartridge on a flat, disposable surface with the nozzle facing up to prevent ink from leaking onto surfaces. If the cartridge is empty, seal it in a plastic bag for proper disposal or take it to an HP recycling drop-off location.
Prepare for a new cartridge
Before installing a replacement, check that the new cartridge matches the HP model number printed on the cartridge and in the printer's display or menu. Remove any protective tape or plastic clip from the new cartridge, then insert it into the same color-coded slot until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge door, power the printer back on, and run a printhead alignment or calibration page if the printer prompts you.

If a cartridge does not release easily, do not force it. Check for a small locking tab that may be disengaged or a carriage that is not fully parked. For cartridge-based printers without a separate printhead, gently wiggle the cartridge side to side while pulling upward. If ink has dried around the nozzle, remove the cartridge and let the nozzle sit on a damp, lint-free cloth for a few minutes to soften the dried ink before reinserting.
