Choose Your Speaker Layout
The most common setups are 5.1 and 7.1. A 5.1 system uses front left, center, front right, two surround speakers, and a subwoofer. A 7.1 adds two rear surround channels. Match the layout to your room size and seating position; smaller rooms often sound better with fewer speakers placed carefully rather than more speakers crammed in.
Place Speakers for Best Imaging
- Front left and right: Angle them toward the seating position, roughly ear height when seated.
- Center channel: Place it above or below the TV, aimed at ear level, to anchor dialogue.
- Surround speakers: Position them slightly above ear level and to the sides or behind the listener, angled forward toward the listening area.
- Subwoofer: Corner placement adds bass energy; try a few spots to minimize rattles and uneven low-end.
Wire and Connect the Receiver
Run speaker wires from each channel to the corresponding binding posts on the AV receiver. Keep cables away from power cords to reduce interference. Connect the TV, streaming box, or game console to an HDMI ARC or eARC input, then set the receiver as the audio output device in the TV settings.
Calibrate the System
Use the receiver's auto-calibration microphone or a manual test tone generator to set speaker distances and levels. Play a surround-sound test track and listen for clear dialogue from the center, tight stereo imaging from the fronts, and smooth ambient movement from the surrounds. Adjust individual channel volumes if any sound feels too loud or too quiet.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Placing surround speakers too far back or too high, which dulls the surround effect.
- Ignoring room acoustics; soft furnishings and bookshelves help tame reflections.
- Using too-long speaker wire, which can subtly increase resistance and reduce damping.
- Forgetting to set the correct speaker size (small vs. large) in the receiver for each channel.
