How to Switch Messenger Accounts
Switching Messenger accounts lets you keep personal and work conversations separate on the same device. You can add a second account and swap between them in the app settings. The process is nearly identical on Android, iPhone, and the desktop app, though the web version has a slightly different flow.

Adding a Second Messenger Account
Before you can switch, you need the second account logged in. Open Messenger and go to your profile picture or menu. Choose Settings, then Account, and select Add Account. Enter the phone number or email and password for the other account, then verify it through the code sent to you. Repeat this for each additional account you want to access.
On Android
Tap your profile picture in the top left, scroll to Settings, and tap your name at the top. Choose Add Account, sign in, and you will see a prompt to switch or keep both accounts active.
On iPhone
Go to Settings within the app, tap your name, and select Add Account. After signing in, return to the main screen and use the account switcher at the top.
On Desktop or Web
Click your profile picture in the bottom left corner on the desktop app, or the gear icon on the web version. Select Switch Account, then Add Account to sign in and toggle between them.
Switching Between Accounts
Once multiple accounts are added, switching is instant. Tap or click your profile icon, and a list of linked accounts appears. Select the one you want to use, and the app reloads with that inbox active. Your chat history for each account stays separate and tied to that login.
Removing an Account You No Longer Use
If you want to clean up the list, go to Settings, select the account you wish to remove, and choose Log Out or Remove. This revokes access on that device but does not delete your messages from the other account or from Messenger's servers if you log back in later.
Troubleshooting Common Issues
If the app does not let you add an account, check that you are running the latest version. A slow connection or a cache glitch can block the login screen. On the web version, switching accounts sometimes requires clearing cookies or using an incognito window if you are hitting a conflict with a saved session.
