How to Turn Network Discovery Off

Disabling network discovery stops your PC from advertising itself and seeing other devices on the same network. On Windows 10 and 11, the setting lives in the network profile and the Windows Firewall, and the exact steps depend on whether the connection is set to Private or Public.

Turn It Off in Settings

Use the Control Panel Path

Press Windows+R, type control.exe /name Microsoft.NetworkAndSharingCenter, and press Enter. Click Change advanced sharing settings on the left. Expand the current profile, then set Network discovery to Turn off network discovery. Click Save changes.

Switch to a Public Network Profile

When a network is set to Public, Windows automatically limits discovery and file sharing. In Settings, go to Network & Security, choose Wi-Fi or Ethernet, click the network name, and set Network profile type to Public. This is often the fastest way to reduce visibility.

What Turning Discovery Off Affects

• Your PC will not appear in the network list of other devices.
• File and printer sharing will stop unless you make an exception.
• Other devices on the same network will not see your shared folders or media.

When to Keep Discovery On

Leave discovery on only on trusted home or office networks where you need to share files or printers. For coffee shops, airports, and hotel Wi-Fi, keep it off and let Windows treat the network as Public.

Firewall and Third-Party Software

Windows Firewall manages discovery rules under Advanced Settings. If you use third-party security suites, they often add their own network protection tabs that can override the built-in setting. Check the security app's network or firewall section if discovery re-enables after you turn it off.
