How to Use a Squeegee

A squeegee works by pressing a flexible blade against a surface and moving it across to spread liquid or lift moisture. Hold the handle firmly at a slight angle, keep the blade flat, and let the tool do the work rather than forcing it. Whether you are cleaning glass, drying a car, or applying ink, the basic motion stays the same.

Grip and Stroke Basics

Wrap your fingers around the handle with your thumb on top for control. Start at the top or highest point of the surface and pull the squeegee down or toward you in one smooth pass. Overlap each stroke slightly so no strips of liquid are left behind. Use a dry cloth or towel to wipe the blade edge between passes and keep the work area clean.

Pressure and Blade Angle

Press evenly with moderate pressure — too little leaves streaks, and too much can damage the blade or the surface. The ideal blade angle is usually between 30 and 45 degrees relative to the surface. On delicate glass or coated surfaces, use a lighter touch and a softer blade to avoid scratching.

Squeegee Types by Task

• Window squeegees: Use a rubber or silicone blade with a telescoping handle for tall glass. Work in an S-shaped pattern on large panes.
• Car detailing: Use a soft rubber blade and dry the vehicle section by section, starting from the top.
• Screen printing: Use a harder squeegee with a consistent push stroke, holding a 70- to 90-degree angle to deposit ink evenly.

Maintenance and Blade Care

Rinse the blade with water after each use and dry it before storing. Replace the squeegee blade when it chips, cracks, or leaves streaks no matter how much pressure you apply. Keep spare blades on hand so you can swap them quickly and maintain a clean finish.
