Understanding the Curves Graph
The Curves dialog plots a grid where the horizontal axis represents the original brightness of the image (input) and the vertical axis represents the adjusted brightness (output). The diagonal line running from the lower-left corner to the upper-right corner shows the baseline: no change. A point placed on that line and dragged upward will brighten the corresponding tonal region; dragging it downward will darken it. The far-left anchor point controls the deepest shadows, the far-right point controls the brightest highlights, and the center point governs the midtones. You can add as many points as you need, and the curve smoothly interpolates between them, so the transitions remain natural.
Working With Adjustment Layers
The most non-destructive way to use Curves is through an Adjustment Layer. Choose Layer > New Adjustment Layer > Curves, or click the Curves icon at the bottom of the Layers panel. To fix an underexposed image, lift the lower portion of the curve so the shadows move toward the right side of the histogram without touching the top. To recover blown highlights, pull the upper-right section of the curve downward until the bright details stop clipping. For an S-curve contrast boost, place an anchor point in the shadows and drag it slightly down, then place another in the highlights and drag it slightly up, keeping the midtones near the diagonal to preserve natural exposure. You can also target specific color channels — Red, Green, and Blue — to correct color casts or add creative color grading to the shadows, midtones, or highlights independently.
Practical Tips for Cleaner Results
A few habits will keep your Curves work from falling apart. Always work on a duplicate layer or an Adjustment Layer so you can revert changes. Use the On-Image adjustment tool, the hand icon that appears when you hover over the graph, to click directly on the tonal region you want to modify and drag vertically. Toggle the preview checkbox to compare before and after, and zoom into the histogram while adjusting to watch for clipped shadows or highlights. If you need to match the curve of one image to another, the Curves dialog includes a target adjustment tool and an option to load curves from a preset, which speeds up batch corrections across a series of photos.
Combining Curves With Other Adjustments
Curves pairs well with other Photoshop tools for a complete tonal workflow. Run a Levels adjustment first to set the black and white points, then refine the shape with Curves for midtone contrast. Apply a Curves adjustment inside a Smart Object to leverage Smart Filters, or clip the Curves layer to a specific layer so the adjustment affects only that element in a composite.
