A humming furnace that trips the safety switch, shuts down mid-cycle, or produces no heat needs professional attention right away.

Cost is a practical factor in the decision. Replacing a blower motor or a capacitor is usually affordable and can extend the life of the furnace by several years. Replacing a transformer is similarly straightforward. But if the hum is caused by a failing blower motor in an aging furnace, the repair may not be worth the cost compared with installing a new, higher-efficiency unit.
