What is inflammation

The classic signs are redness, heat, swelling, pain, and loss of function. These occur because blood vessels dilate and immune cells flood the area to clear debris and begin repair.

Crucially, this entire process can be triggered by non-infectious causes such as autoimmune disorders, irritants, or even obesity.
What is an infection
An infection occurs when a pathogen enters the body and begins to replicate. The immune system detects the foreign organism and mounts a response, which often includes inflammation. Common types include bacterial infections like strep throat, viral infections like influenza, fungal infections like athlete's foot, and parasitic infections like malaria.
Not all infections produce obvious symptoms, and some infections are localized while others spread systemically. The presence of an infection is confirmed through lab tests like cultures, blood work, or imaging, which identify the specific organism involved.
How they overlap and differ
Infection is a common cause of inflammation, which is why the two are often confused. A wound becomes red, hot, and swollen because bacteria have entered and the immune system is fighting them. However, inflammation without infection is equally common. For example, a sprained ankle triggers inflammation from physical trauma alone, with no pathogen present.
Another key difference is the treatment. Infections may require antibiotics, antivirals, or antifungals to eliminate the pathogen. Inflammation, on the other hand, is often managed with anti-inflammatory medications, rest, or addressing the underlying cause, whether it is an autoimmune condition or an injury.
