Is a Planned Parenthood Donation Tax Deductible?
Whether a donation to Planned Parenthood is tax deductible depends on the type of gift, the fund it goes to, and your filing status. For most people, the answer is yes — but only if you itemize and only if the contribution goes to a qualifying part of the organization.

When the Donation Is Deductible
Planned Parenthood Federation of America is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, which means gifts that are purely charitable are generally deductible on Schedule A of Form 1040. This applies to cash donations, checks, and donations of appreciated property such as stocks. To claim the deduction, you must itemize rather than take the standard deduction, and you need a contemporaneous written acknowledgment from the organization for any single gift of $250 or more. For gifts under $250, a bank record or receipt is usually sufficient.
When the Donation Is Not Deductible
Not every dollar given to Planned Parenthood qualifies. Donations made to specific patient funds, such as the abortion care fund, are typically considered personal gifts to individuals and are not deductible. Similarly, donations made in exchange for goods or events, such as gala tickets or merchandise, are only deductible up to the fair market value of the benefit received. Political contributions to Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the affiliated 501(c)(4) organization, are never deductible as charitable contributions.
How to Claim the Deduction
If you itemize, report charitable gifts to Planned Parenthood on Schedule A under "Gifts to Charity." Keep records that show the date, amount, and name of the organization. For appreciated property donations, you will generally need a qualified appraisal if the value exceeds $5,000, and the deduction is usually limited to the fair market value at the time of the gift.
State Tax Considerations
Beyond the federal deduction, some states allow a charitable deduction or credit for donations to qualified nonprofits, including Planned Parenthood. The rules vary by state, and some states have specific provisions or limitations for reproductive health nonprofits. Check your state tax agency guidance or consult a tax professional to see whether your state return offers a similar benefit.
