Effective treatment often addresses the gut and the liver together. Dietary changes, such as reducing processed foods and increasing fiber, can improve the microbiome and reduce liver fat. Probiotics and prebiotics are being studied for their role in reducing inflammation and improving outcomes in fatty liver disease and cirrhosis.

For patients with advanced liver disease, managing gut health becomes even more important. Treating small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, avoiding unnecessary antibiotics, and using lactulose or rifaximin for hepatic encephalopathy all target the gut-liver connection.
