What Mutual of Omaha Plan G Covers

Mutual of Omaha Plan G is a standardized Medicare Supplement policy that fills many of the gaps left by Original Medicare. In most states, Plan G covers Part A coinsurance and hospital costs up to an additional 365 days after Medicare benefits are used, Part A hospice coinsurance, Part B coinsurance and copayments, the first three pints of blood, and skilled nursing facility coinsurance. It also covers the Part A deductible and the Part B deductible in most cases. Plan G does not cover the Part B excess charge, which is the difference between what a doctor charges and what Medicare approves.

What Plan G Does Not Pay For

Plan G does not cover the Part B annual deductible, outpatient prescription drugs, vision or dental care, hearing aids, or long-term custodial care. Because the Part B deductible is not covered, you pay that amount each year before the supplemental benefits begin. Plan G also does not cover services outside the United States beyond very limited emergency travel coverage, so international medical needs require separate planning.

Eligibility and Enrollment Timing

You must be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Part B to buy Mutual of Omaha Plan G. The best time to enroll is during your Medigap open enrollment period, which begins the first month you are both 65 or older and enrolled in Part B. During that window, Mutual of Omaha cannot deny you coverage or charge more based on health history. Outside that period, the company may use medical underwriting, which could mean higher premiums or a decline.

Guaranteed Issue Rights

Certain situations trigger guaranteed issue rights, including losing employer or retiree coverage, leaving a Medicare Advantage plan during the trial period, or moving out of a plan's service area. If one of these applies, you can switch to Mutual of Omaha Plan G without being medically underwritten.

Plan G vs. Other Medigap Plans

Plan G is often compared with Plan F and Plan N. Plan F covers the Part B deductible, but new Plan F policies are no longer available to people who became eligible for Medicare on or after January 1, 2020. Plan N offers lower premiums but requires copayments for some office visits and emergency room trips. Plan G offers a middle ground with broad coverage and generally predictable costs.

Standardization Across Carriers

Because Plan G is standardized by federal law, the core benefits are the same from one insurer to another. What changes is the premium, the billing practices, and any extra services Mutual of Omaha may offer, such as wellness programs or customer support lines.

Before You Enroll

Check whether Mutual of Omaha sells Plan G in your county, compare the premium with other carriers, and confirm whether the policy is guaranteed-renewable. Review the full outline of coverage in the plan document and ask about any waiting periods for preexisting conditions. Understanding these details helps you decide whether Mutual of Omaha Plan G fits your Medicare coverage needs.
