Physical vs. Financial Trading
Physical trading involves the actual movement of crude or products between sellers and buyers, typically through pipeline, tanker, or truck. Financial trading, by contrast, uses futures, options, and swaps to speculate on price or hedge risk. The two layers interact constantly: financial positions can signal market expectations, while physical supply disruptions quickly show up in futures prices.
Key Benchmarks and Contracts
Traders rely on a small set of benchmarks to price oil globally. The most widely used benchmarks include:
- West Texas Intermediate (WTI) — light, sweet crude traded on the NYMEX, often used as a U.S. reference.
- Brent Crude — a blend from the North Sea, serving as the benchmark for roughly two-thirds of globally traded crude.
- Dubai/Oman — used as the reference for Middle Eastern crude sold to Asia.
- Urals — a Russian export blend priced relative to Brent, often with a discount.
Contracts are typically standardized by exchange, specifying grade, volume, delivery location, and settlement method. While most participants close positions before delivery, the contract structure ensures the market reflects where and when oil will actually move.

Oil trades on regulated exchanges and over-the-counter (OTC) platforms. The main venues include the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX), the Intercontinental Exchange (ICE) for Brent, and the Dubai Mercantile Exchange (DME) for Oman crude. OTC trading, often through banks and brokers, handles large blocks of crude and products that do not pass through a public order book. Electronic platforms and algorithmic execution have made it possible to trade oil nearly around the clock.
Who Participates in Oil Markets
The cast of players is broad. Producers and national oil companies sell crude to refiners, traders, and governments. Refiners buy to process gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and petrochemical feedstocks. Financial traders, hedge funds, and commodity funds take positions to manage risk or seek profit. End-users such as airlines, shipping companies, and trucking firms use futures and options to lock in fuel costs. Governments and strategic petroleum reserve authorities also participate, buying or releasing crude to stabilize domestic supply.
What Moves Oil Prices
Oil prices respond to a set of recurring drivers:
- Supply factors — OPEC+ production decisions, outages from hurricanes or geopolitics, and changes in U.S. shale output.
- Demand factors — global economic growth, seasonal driving and flying patterns, and shifts toward electrification or alternative fuels.
- Financial factors — the U.S. dollar, interest rates, and capital flows into or out of commodity assets.

Risks and Risk Management
Oil trading carries price risk, basis risk, and operational risk. Producers hedge to lock in revenue; refiners hedge to secure feedstock; consumers hedge to stabilize budgets. Common tools include futures, options, and swaps. Ineffective hedging, excessive speculation, or misreading supply data can lead to significant losses, which is why risk management, position limits, and margin requirements are central to exchange rules and trading desks.
The Evolving Shape of Oil Trading
The industry is changing as data analytics, algorithmic execution, and alternative fuels reshape flows. LNG and biofuels now share trading desks with crude, and environmental, social, and governance considerations increasingly affect counterparty choices. Carbon pricing and emissions trading also intersect with oil, creating new layers of complexity for traders who must manage both energy and carbon risk.
