Managing Recurring Fluid Buildup

Paracentesis fluid removal treats the symptoms of ascites but does not address the underlying cause. For patients with chronic liver disease, repeated procedures may be necessary. Long-term management often includes sodium restriction, diuretic medications, and treatment of the liver condition itself. When fluid returns frequently, a doctor may discuss other options such as a transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, or TIPS, or referral for liver transplantation evaluation.
