A PBX (Private Branch Exchange) phone system manages internal and external calls for an organization. How PBX Routing Works

Internal calls stay within the PBX, so two employees in the same office can talk without using an outside line. The system assigns extensions, manages call queues, and can forward calls to mobile phones or other locations when someone is away from their desk.

Cloud PBX (Hosted PBX)
In a cloud PBX, the routing logic runs in a provider's data center, and the business uses IP phones or softphones connected over the internet. There is no on-premises PBX hardware to manage. The provider handles updates, redundancy, and security patches, and the business typically pays a per-user monthly fee.
