This includes managing nominations — the formal requests to move gas through pipelines — and coordinating with pipeline operators, storage facilities, and, in the case of LNG, loading and unloading terminals. Late deliveries or supply shortfalls can trigger penalties, so physical traders must maintain precise scheduling and contingency plans.

Physical gas trading is organized around delivery hubs, which are specific points in the pipeline network where gas changes hands. Risks in Physical Natural Gas Trading

Physical trading carries risks that go beyond simple price volatility. Transportation bottlenecks, pipeline outages, and weather events can disrupt delivery schedules. Counterparty risk is also significant: if a buyer or seller fails to fulfill its contractual obligations, the trader may be left with unused capacity or an unmet supply commitment.

Price risk is managed through a combination of physical contract structures and financial hedging. Traders often lock in prices using futures contracts on exchanges like the New York Mercantile Exchange (NYMEX) or over-the-counter swaps, which allow them to offset the cost of physical positions. Storage strategy also plays a role — injecting gas into underground storage during periods of low demand and withdrawing it during peak demand can smooth out price exposure.

Physical vs. Financial Trading

It is important to distinguish physical natural gas trading from financial trading. Financial trading involves derivatives such as futures, options, and swaps that settle in cash and do not involve the movement of actual gas. Physical trading, by contrast, requires the delivery of a tangible commodity and involves logistics, title transfer, and often complex contractual arrangements. Many large trading houses engage in both, using financial markets to hedge the price exposure created by their physical positions.

The Future of Physical Natural Gas Trading

The physical gas market continues to evolve as global trade patterns shift. The expansion of LNG infrastructure has created new supply routes, linking regions that were once isolated. At the same time, the energy transition is reshaping demand, with some markets seeing a gradual decline in gas use while others, particularly in Asia, project continued growth. For physical traders, success will depend on the ability to navigate these dynamics, manage logistics efficiently, and price risk in an increasingly interconnected market.
