It involves sizing supply and drain lines, avoiding structural members, maintaining required slopes and support spacing, and leaving access for future repairs. A wall that looks clean on the surface can hide costly mistakes if the rough-in is rushed. Whether you are adding a bathroom, relocating a kitchen sink, or running a home run system, the principles stay the same: map everything first, then execute in a deliberate sequence.

Mapping the Rough-In Layout

Start by marking the wall on both sides where each fixture will connect. For a new bathroom, this typically includes a toilet, sink, shower or tub, and possibly a bidet or washing machine. Use a pencil and a laser level or plum bob to transfer drain and supply centers vertically through the framing. Note the following before you cut:

  • Wall cavity width and stud locations (use a stud finder and verify with probing).
  • Header and lintel positions above windows or doors.
  • Floor joists or beams below that may block vertical runs.
  • Existing electrical wires and boxes, which must maintain clearance.
  • Local codes for minimum pipe sizes, slope, and cleanout access.

Choosing the Right Materials

Supply lines carry pressurized water and must handle temperature and pressure ratings for your home. Common choices include copper (Types L and M), PEX (cross-linked polyethylene), and CPVC for cold water only. Drain lines are almost always PVC or ABS, sized by fixture requirements—for example, a toilet needs a 3-inch minimum drain, while lavatories and sinks typically use 1.25- or 1.5-inch pipes.

Cutting Openings and Framing Around Pipes

Once the layout is set, mark the wall cavities where pipes will pass. Use a keyhole saw or oscillating multi-tool for clean cuts through drywall, and a hole saw or spade bit for penetrating studs. Always stay at least 1.5 inches from the edge of a stud to avoid weakening it. If you are notching a stud, keep the notch no deeper than 25 percent of the stud's width, and never notch the top or bottom plate. Add nail plates where pipes pass through framing to protect the lines from screws and nails.

Running Supply Lines Through the Wall

Begin with the main supply branch, usually a ¾-inch line that feeds individual ½-inch runs to each fixture. PEX is popular for wall runs because it flexes around corners, reducing the need for fittings. When you must use elbows and tees, keep them accessible and avoid tight bends that restrict flow. Secure supply lines with pipe clamps or straps every 32 inches for horizontal runs and within 12 inches of each fitting. For a home-run system, each fixture gets a dedicated line back to a manifold, which simplifies balancing pressure and shutting off water to a single point.

Drain Lines, Vents, and Slope

Drain pipes must slope continuously toward the main waste line or soil stack. A ¼-inch drop per foot is the standard minimum, though some codes require more for larger fixtures. Run vent pipes alongside or above drain lines to break siphons and allow air into the system. Horizontal drain supports should be spaced no more than 4 feet apart, and within 24 inches of each fitting. Make sure every fixture has a trap, and that venting follows the code path—often through the roof or to an atmospheric vent above the fixture.

Insulation, Fire Blocking, and Closing Up

Insulate supply pipes in unconditioned wall cavities to prevent freezing and condensation. Place fire-blocking material between studs in walls that cross fire-rated assemblies, and avoid filling cavities with insulation around vent pipes unless the insulation is rated for high heat. Before closing the wall, run a pressure test on supply lines and a water test on drains. Check that all unions and access panels remain reachable.

Finishing and Inspecting the Wall

After the drywall or paneling is hung, reinstall any covers, access panels, and trim. A final inspection by a licensed plumber or local building official is usually required before walls are closed. Keep copies of the as-built layout, including pipe sizes and run lengths, somewhere accessible. Properly plumbing a wall makes future repairs faster and protects the home from water damage.
