  • Remove the old filter. Slide the old filter out carefully. Note which direction the airflow arrow was pointing so you can replicate it with the new one. Inspect the old filter for excessive dust buildup, which can indicate the filter is undersized or the system needs more frequent changes.
  • Check the size and airflow rating. The filter dimensions are printed on the frame (length, width, and depth). Confirm these match the slot. Also note whether the filter is a standard fiberglass panel, a pleated media filter, or a higher-efficiency type, because each has a recommended airflow direction and MERV rating for your system.

  • Replace the cover or grille. Secure the panel or snap the grille back in place.

  • Common Mistakes to Avoid

    • Ignoring the airflow arrow. Many filters look similar on both sides, but one side is denser. The arrow always points toward the equipment, never toward the return duct.
    • Forgetting to check the MERV rating. A filter with too high a MERV rating can choke a standard blower. Most residential systems work best with MERV 8 to MERV 13; higher ratings are fine only if the blower can handle the static pressure.
    • Leaving gaps. If the filter does not fill the slot completely, use a matching size rather than folding or cutting it. Gaps let dust bypass the filter and accumulate on the blower wheel and heat exchanger.
    • Not marking the date. Write the replacement date on the filter frame with a marker. This helps you track how quickly filters load up and adjust your schedule.

    How Often to Replace the Filter

    A standard 1-inch fiberglass filter typically needs replacement every 30 days during heavy use. Pleated 1-inch filters can last 60 to 90 days, and 4-inch media filters often go 6 to 12 months. Households with pets, smokers, or allergy sufferers may need to replace filters more frequently. The best way to know is to inspect the filter monthly; when you can no longer see light through the media, it is time for a new one.

    If the filter slot is damaged, if the filter fits loosely despite the correct size, or if the furnace blows warm air after a filter change, stop and contact a qualified HVAC technician. A persistently dirty filter in a clean slot can also point to a duct leak or a blower issue that a professional should diagnose.
