Carbon dioxide units are refilled with liquid CO2, which expands rapidly upon discharge to smother flames by displacing oxygen. Using the wrong agent is a serious risk. A water refill in a unit originally charged with dry chemical will create a corrosive slurry that damages the valve and internal surfaces. This is why refilling must follow the label and the technician's documentation — the agent, weight, and pressure must all match the original specification.
The Refilling Process Step by Step
Refilling is not a DIY task. A licensed technician begins by depressurizing the canister fully and disconnecting the valve assembly. The shell is then hydrostatically tested or visually inspected, depending on its age and local regulations, to check for metal fatigue, pitting, or cracks. The interior is cleaned of any old residue, and the valve is rebuilt with new seals, gaskets, and a fresh charge pin or safety clip.
Next, the correct extinguishing agent is added by weight — not volume — because the density of powders and chemicals can vary with humidity and temperature. The canister is then repressurized with the appropriate gas, and a new gauge or pressure indicator is installed if the original is out of calibration. Finally, the unit is reassembled, weighed to confirm the total charge, and stamped with a new service tag showing the date, the technician's ID, and the next due date.
Cost, Frequency, and When to Replace Instead
Refilling costs less than a new extinguisher, but the price varies by type. A basic dry chemical unit may cost one-third to one-half the price of a new equivalent, while CO2 and specialty units tend to be closer to replacement cost because of the refrigerant and handling requirements. On average, expect a refill to run between 40 and 120 dollars per unit, with larger commercial canisters costing more.
There is a limit, however. Steel shells have a finite service life, typically 15 to 25 years depending on the manufacturer and environment. Aluminum and thin-wall carbon steel units may have shorter lifespans. If the shell shows pitting, a failed hydrostatic test, or a valve that cannot be rebuilt, replacement is the only safe option. In corrosive environments like marine or chemical processing settings, extinguishers may need to be replaced more frequently.
Legal and Insurance Considerations
Refilling without proper documentation can create liability problems. Insurance inspectors and fire marshals often require a record of service that includes the extinguisher's serial number, the date of refill, the type of agent used, and the signature of the servicing technician. Without this, a property owner may find a claim denied after a fire or face a citation during an inspection.
Keep refilled units in their designated locations and ensure the tamper seal and inspection tag are visible. A fire extinguisher that has been refilled but lacks a current tag is treated the same as an untagged unit — which means it is effectively out of service and a potential code violation.
