Volatility Indicators

- Bollinger Bands: A moving average wrapped in standard deviation bands. Squeezes often precede sharp moves.
- ATR: Measures average true range and is widely used to set stop-loss distances.
- Ichimoku Cloud: A multi-component system that defines support, resistance, trend direction, and momentum in one glance.
The Volume Layer
Volume indicators track the number of shares or contracts traded and reveal whether a price move is supported by participation. A trend accompanied by rising volume is more likely to persist; a move on thin volume often lacks conviction and can reverse quickly.
Reading Signals Without Blind Spots
Indicators produce signals such as crossovers, overbought or oversold readings, divergences, and breakouts. Each signal type has a specific use case and a known failure rate.

They degrade in low-liquidity environments or during news shocks when price moves become erratic and historical patterns break down. Traders who rely on a single indicator often collect false signals; traders who layer two or three indicators that measure different dimensions of price—such as trend, momentum, and volume—typically see a higher signal-to-noise ratio.
Building a Simple Indicator Workflow
A practical workflow starts with defining the market regime. Is the price making higher highs and higher lows, or is it drifting sideways? From there, select one indicator per category. For example, a 50-period EMA for trend, RSI for momentum, and volume for confirmation. Adjust timeframes to match your holding period: a daily chart indicator behaves differently than the same setting on a 15-minute chart. The goal is not to find a perfect formula but to create a repeatable process that can be tested and refined over time.
