How to Confirm the System Has No External Leak

Start with the car on a level surface and the transmission at operating temperature. Clean any fluid residue around the bell housing, pan, and shaft seals, then place clean cardboard or drip trays under the vehicle. Check the fluid level with the dipstick or fill plug per the manufacturer's procedure. If the level drops again over several days of normal driving and the cardboard stays clean, the loss is almost certainly internal.

A pressure test on the transmission case can reveal seal leakage that is not visible to the eye. Mechanics may also remove the transmission pan or inspect the vent tube for fluid residue. In cases where fluid is migrating into the engine, a compression test or inspection of the bell housing for fluid traces can confirm the path of the loss.

What to Do Next

Do not keep driving with a transmission that is consistently low on fluid. Topping up the correct type of fluid can restore shift quality temporarily, but it does not fix the root cause. Continued operation with low fluid leads to increased friction, heat, and internal damage that can turn a seal replacement into a full transmission rebuild.
