How Footings Work
When a building stands, gravity pushes its entire weight down through the foundation walls and into the footings. The footing then disperses that force across a broader footprint of earth. If the soil cannot handle the pressure, the footing sinks or tilts, cracking walls and floors. Proper depth and width keep the load within the soil's safe bearing capacity.
Common Types of Footings
- Strip footings — continuous concrete strips under load-bearing walls, the most common residential type.
- Isolated pad footings — square or rectangular blocks under individual columns.
- Raft or mat footings — a single large slab under the entire building, used where soil is weak.
- Pile caps — concrete blocks tied to deep driven piles for very soft or unstable ground.
Sizing a Footing
Footing size depends on the building's total load, the type of soil, and local building codes. Clay, silt, and loose sand require wider footings than dense, well-compacted gravel or rock. Engineers calculate the required width and thickness, then the contractor excavates to the correct depth so the footing sits below the frost line in cold climates.
Why Footing Design Matters
A footing that is too narrow or shallow can cause differential settlement — one part of the building sinks more than another. Cracked walls, stuck doors, and uneven floors are early warning signs. In freeze-thaw climates, footings placed above the frost line heave upward when moisture in the soil freezes, again damaging the structure.
Materials and Construction
Most modern footings are poured concrete, often reinforced with rebar for tensile strength. The base is typically leveled and compacted, sometimes with a gravel layer beneath to improve drainage. Formwork shapes the concrete, and it cures in place before the foundation wall is built on top.
