How Genetic Factors Work

Genetic Factors and Disease Risk

Many common disorders, including type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and schizophrenia, involve complex interactions among multiple genetic factors and environment. A genetic variant may raise risk but not guarantee illness, and protective factors can offset inherited susceptibility. Rare monogenic disorders, by contrast, are often driven by a single high-impact variant.

Why Understanding Genetic Factors Matters

Knowledge of genetic factors enables risk assessment, pharmacogenomic testing to guide medication choices, and in some cases early intervention. It also underscores that biology is not destiny — genes set a range of possibilities that environment and behavior shape throughout life.
