Which Credit Cards Work at Costco Gas Stations
Costco gas stations accept most major credit and debit cards, including Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover. However, to get the full 4% cash back reward at the pump, you must use the Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi. Debit cards linked to a Visa or Mastercard network also work, but they typically do not earn the same elevated rewards as the co-branded card.

The Costco Anywhere Visa by Citi
This is the only credit card branded specifically for Costco, and it is the best way to maximize savings on fuel. The 4% back applies to all qualifying purchases at Costco gas stations and up to $7,000 in annual purchases at Costco warehouses, with 1% back on all other purchases.
Other Cards Accepted at the Pump
Beyond the co-branded Visa, Costco accepts a wide range of cards, but rewards rates vary by card issuer. In general:
- Visa and Mastercard debit and credit cards are accepted for standard fuel purchases.
- American Express is accepted at most Costco locations.
- Discover is accepted at many stations, but it is less universally guaranteed than Visa or Mastercard.
- Cash and checks drawn on a U.S. bank are also accepted inside the gas station kiosk.
Why the Costco Visa Is Worth Using
Even if you carry other cards, using the Costco Visa at the pump is hard to beat for regular Costco shoppers. The 4% back effectively lowers the per-gallon price, and the rewards can be redeemed for cash back, gift cards, or statement credits. If you do not have the Costco Visa, using a rewards credit card you already carry is still fine, but you will miss out on the elevated fuel rate.
