Which Game Consoles Play Blu-ray

Only the Sony PlayStation and Microsoft Xbox families have ever included built-in Blu-ray disc drives. Nintendo has never used Blu-ray, sticking with proprietary optical media across every generation. If you want a game console that doubles as a Blu-ray player, you are looking at a narrow field of PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S models.

PlayStation Models With Blu-ray Support

Every PlayStation model from the PS4 onward plays standard Blu-ray discs and, on supported hardware, 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The PS3 was the first console to add a Blu-ray drive, but it plays only standard Blu-ray and not the 4K format.

  • PS3 — Standard Blu-ray only
  • PS4 and PS4 Pro — Standard Blu-ray and 1080p/4K playback on supported titles
  • PS5 and PS5 Digital Edition — The PS5 disc drive plays standard Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray; the Digital Edition has no disc drive at all

Xbox Models With Blu-ray Support

Microsoft shipped Blu-ray drives starting with the Xbox One family. The original Xbox One, Xbox One S, and Xbox One X all play standard Blu-ray, while the Xbox One S and Xbox One X also handle 4K video streams and Ultra HD Blu-ray when paired with a 4K display.

  • Xbox One — Standard Blu-ray
  • Xbox One S — Standard Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray with a 4K TV
  • Xbox One X — Standard Blu-ray and 4K Blu-ray with a 4K TV
  • Xbox Series X — Standard Blu-ray and 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray
  • Xbox Series S — No disc drive; cannot play any Blu-ray

Why Nintendo Does Not Play Blu-ray

Nintendo has consistently chosen smaller, proprietary formats. The Wii U used a proprietary high-density optical disc, and the Switch uses game cards. This means no Nintendo console, current or past, can play a Blu-ray disc without external hardware, which is not practical.

Can Any Console Play 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray

Only the PS5 disc drive, Xbox One X, Xbox One S, and Xbox Series X support 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. The PS4 family plays standard Blu-ray and streams 4K from apps but cannot read the 4K disc format. The Xbox Series S has no disc drive and relies entirely on streaming.

External Drives and Workarounds

You cannot add a Blu-ray drive to a Nintendo Switch or Xbox Series S through USB. On the PS5 Digital Edition, there is no official way to add a disc drive either. Your only reliable path to physical Blu-ray on a console is to buy a model that already includes the drive.
