How a Service Brake System Works

In a disc brake setup, the caliper squeezes a pair of brake pads against a spinning rotor attached to the wheel hub. In a drum brake, a wheel cylinder pushes two shoes outward against the inside of a rotating drum. Both designs create the friction needed to slow the wheel. The system relies on a closed hydraulic loop filled with brake fluid, which is incompressible under pressure, ensuring that the force you apply at the pedal translates directly and predictably to the braking components.

  • Brake pedal and booster: The pedal multiplies the force from your leg, and the vacuum booster amplifies it further before it reaches the master cylinder.

Service Brake vs. Parking Brake

The service brake is designed for active, repeatable stopping during motion, while the parking brake is a mechanical backup intended to hold the vehicle stationary when parked. Some vehicles use the parking brake as an emergency brake, but it is not built for the repeated, high-energy use the service brake endures. Relying on the parking brake to stop a moving vehicle can damage it and compromise your stopping power.

When to Service Your Brakes

Warning signs include a spongy or soft pedal, grinding noises, vibrations during braking, a pulling sensation to one side, or a brake warning light on the dashboard. Because service brakes wear down gradually, regular inspections of pad thickness, rotor condition, and fluid level help prevent sudden failure. Brake fluid absorbs moisture over time, which can lower its boiling point and reduce performance under hard braking, so periodic fluid replacement is part of routine maintenance.
