How MAPI Works
MAPI operates as a layered interface between the client application and the messaging server. Rather than relying on a single transport, it can route messages through SMTP for internet delivery or use internal Exchange RPC over HTTP for corporate networks. The client calls MAPI functions to compose, read, delete, or move messages, and the MAPI service provider translates those calls into server-specific operations.
MAPI vs Other Email Protocols
Unlike IMAP or POP3, which focus solely on retrieving messages from a server, MAPI is a full-featured messaging system. It maintains a persistent connection and syncs mailboxes in near real time, supporting rich formatting, read receipts, and delegated access. While IMAP is platform-agnostic, MAPI is tightly integrated with the Microsoft ecosystem and provides deeper server-side capabilities.

MAPI and Modern Microsoft 365
Microsoft has shifted much of MAPI functionality to REST-based APIs like Microsoft Graph and Exchange Web Services, especially for cloud-hosted Exchange Online. However, MAPI remains relevant for on-premises deployments and scenarios requiring low-level mailbox access. Developers working with legacy systems or performance-sensitive integrations still rely on MAPI or its extended versions.
