Hard Disk Drives (HDDs)

Solid-State Drives (SSDs)
SSDs store data on flash memory chips with no moving parts. They boot systems faster, load applications quicker, and resist drops better than HDDs. Prices have dropped significantly, and SSDs are now the standard for most laptops and desktops.
NVMe and M.2 Drives
NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) is a protocol that lets SSDs communicate directly with the CPU over a PCIe slot. M.2 refers to the physical shape of the drive. Together, they deliver the fastest consumer storage available today.
External and Removable Storage
External hard drives, USB flash drives, and SD cards extend capacity or let you move files between machines. They are useful for backups and sharing large files, though they are typically slower than internal drives.
Storage Capacity: What You Need
The right capacity depends on what you store. A basic setup for documents and web browsing needs 256 GB to 512 GB. Video editing, gaming, or storing a large media library often requires 1 TB or more.
Storage vs. Memory
People often confuse storage with memory (RAM). Memory is temporary workspace your processor uses while running programs; storage is permanent. When you save a file, it moves from memory to storage.
How to Choose
Balance speed, price, and capacity. An SSD for your operating system and apps improves daily responsiveness. Pair it with a larger HDD or a second SSD if you need room for files. Consider NVMe if your motherboard supports it and you want the best performance.
