The effect appears modest and context-dependent, strongest when taken before a known stressor.
Ashwagandha
Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera), an adaptogenic herb, is often framed as cortisol-lowering rather than blocking. Randomized trials using root extracts standardized to withanolides have reported reductions in serum cortisol, subjective stress scores, and morning cortisol awakening response. Typical studied doses range from 300 to 600 mg daily of a concentrated extract.
Rhodiola Rosea
Rhodiola rosea may lower cortisol reactivity under acute stress. Human studies using standardized extracts have observed blunted salivary cortisol responses during stress tests, though the effect size is generally smaller than what phosphatidylserine or ashwagandha trials report. Doses studied typically fall between 200 and 400 mg of a standardized extract.
Other Nutrients With Indirect Support
Magnesium, vitamin C, and lemon balm (Melissa officinalis) have indirect evidence for cortisol modulation. Magnesium deficiency is associated with HPA axis dysregulation; correcting it may help normalize stress responses. Vitamin C is concentrated in the adrenal glands and participates in cortisol synthesis. Lemon balm has shown modest anxiolytic effects in small trials, which may secondarily reduce cortisol output.
What the Evidence Does and Does Not Show
These supplements do not eliminate cortisol — a hormone essential for alertness, immune function, and metabolism. The goal is to reduce chronic, elevated levels linked to poor recovery and sleep, not to suppress a healthy stress response. Effects vary by dose, formulation, timing, and individual biology. A supplement that works in one study may fail in another, and long-term safety data remain limited for many of these compounds.
How to Evaluate a Cortisol-Modulating Supplement
When choosing a product, look for standardized extracts with published human trials, transparent dosing, and third-party testing. Phosphatidylserine from sunflower or soy lecithin, ashwagandha root extract with known withanolide content, and rhodiola standardized to rosavins and salidroside are common quality markers. Track subjective sleep, energy, and recovery when starting any new supplement, and consult a clinician if you are on medications or have a medical condition.
