How to Test a Battery Before Winter
A proper test goes beyond checking voltage. A load tester or conductance tester measures cold-cranking amps and internal resistance, revealing weakness that a static voltage reading misses. Many auto parts stores offer free testing, but the result depends on the tester's condition and the tester's calibration. A battery that passes a load test at 70°F may still fail at 0°F, which is why replacing a battery that is more than three years old before winter is a sensible precaution even when it tests borderline.
Prevention and Winter Survival Strategies
- Keep the battery fully charged: Drive the car regularly or use a smart trickle charger or maintainer if the vehicle sits for days.
- Clean terminals and tighten connections: A solid metal-to-metal connection reduces resistance and ensures the starter receives maximum current.
- Use the correct oil weight: Switch to a winter-grade oil recommended by the manufacturer so the starter does not work harder than necessary.
- Minimize parasitic loads overnight: Turn off lights, heated seats, and aftermarket devices before locking the car.
- Use a battery blanket or insulated wrap: These keep the battery warmer, preserving cranking power in extreme cold.
- Replace the battery proactively: If the battery is more than four years old and you live in a climate with harsh winters, replacing it before the first deep freeze eliminates the risk.
What to Do When the Battery Won't Start
If the engine clicks but does not turn over, turn off all accessories and try again. If the battery is frozen — indicated by a bulging case or cracked casing — do not attempt to jump-start it; the explosion risk is real. When the battery is simply discharged or weakened, a jump-start from another vehicle or a portable jump pack can get you running long enough to reach a charging source. Drive for at least 15 to 20 minutes afterward, but understand that a jump-start does not fix an old battery. Have the charging system and the battery itself tested as soon as possible.
When to Replace Instead of Recharge
A battery that fails a load test, reads below 12.4 volts after a full charge, or is more than five years old should be replaced. Repeated jump-starts in winter are a sign that the battery is no longer reliable, not a temporary condition.
