Common Causes of a New Shower Head Leak
- Missing or damaged washer. The rubber or silicone washer inside the connector creates the seal. If it is absent, flattened, or pinched by a cross-threaded fitting, water seeps past the joint.
- Insufficient Teflon tape. Thread seal tape fills microscopic gaps in the male threads. Using too little tape, or wrapping it in the wrong direction, leaves the joint vulnerable to weeping under pressure.

4. Reapply Teflon Tape Correctly
Wrap the tape around the male threads of the shower arm. Stretch it slightly as you go so it conforms to the threads. Apply three to five layers in the direction of the threads, then smooth the tape down with your fingers so the shower head seats evenly.
5. Reconnect by Hand, Then a Quarter Turn

A faint damp spot can be hard to see, but a paper towel reveals moisture immediately. Apply a thin layer of plumber's grease to rubber washers on future replacements to extend their life.
