Blocked Condenser Coil or Outside Airflow

Signs include ice forming on the copper line running to the outdoor unit, a hissing or bubbling sound near the pipes, or the unit running constantly without ever reaching the set temperature. Adding refrigerant without repairing the leak is a temporary band-aid and can violate environmental regulations. A licensed technician should locate the leak, repair it, and recharge the system to the manufacturer's specification.

Thermostat and Control Issues

Sometimes the cooling system works fine, but the controls tell it to stop too early. If the thermostat sensor is loose, positioned near the supply vent, or affected by a draft, it can read the room temperature as already cool enough. Check whether the thermostat is set to cool rather than fan-only mode. On models with a mechanical thermostat, a small calibration error can keep the unit from reaching the target temperature. Try adjusting the set point a few degrees lower than the room temperature and see whether the compressor kicks on and stays running.

Drain Line Blockage and Frozen Evaporator Coil

When warm, humid air hits the cold evaporator coil, moisture condenses and normally drains away through a small channel or pan. If that drain becomes clogged with algae or debris, water backs up and can freeze the coil shut. A frozen evaporator coil looks like a coat of ice on the indoor section of the unit and immediately stops cooling. Turn the unit off, let the ice melt completely, clear the drain with a stiff wire or a wet-dry vacuum, and check the filter at the same time. Restarting the unit before the ice fully melts can damage the compressor.

Electrical and Capacitor Problems

The compressor and fan motors rely on capacitors to start and run. An aging capacitor may fail to deliver enough voltage, so the compressor hums but never starts, or the fan slows down. A window AC not blowing cold air that also makes a clicking or humming noise without starting up may have a failed run capacitor. Capacitors store voltage and can shock you even when the unit is unplugged, so this repair is best left to a professional unless you have experience working with electrical components.

Unit Size and Installation Factors

If a window AC has never cooled properly since it was installed, the unit may simply be undersized for the room. A too-small AC runs nonstop and still cannot pull the temperature down on hot days. Conversely, a unit that is too large will short-cycle, turning on and off before it can remove humidity, which makes the room feel damp and warm. Check the BTU rating against the square footage of the room, and make sure the unit is mounted level and sealed tightly in the window frame so no hot outside air leaks in around the edges.

Some causes, such as a refrigerant leak, a failed compressor, or a wiring fault, are not safe or practical to handle without training.
