How DHT Affects Hair Follicles

Testosterone converts to DHT with the help of an enzyme called 5-alpha reductase. Over years, this miniaturization process leads to the classic horseshoe pattern of remaining hair.

This biological mechanism explains why baldness is so common, but it also clarifies why some men retain a full head of hair well into old age—they simply lack the genetic sensitivity to DHT in their scalp follicles.

When Does Male Pattern Baldness Start

Hair loss can begin as early as the teenage years or as late as a man's 40s or 50s. The most common onset is in the mid-20s to early 30s, with a receding hairline or thinning at the crown often serving as the first visible signs.

While the condition is permanent without treatment, its progression varies widely. Some men experience rapid thinning over a few years, while others see a slow, gradual recession that takes decades to complete.
