Why Your Heater Is Blowing Cold Air
A heater blowing cold air usually means the system is running but failing to heat the air passing over its heat exchanger. In most homes, the cause is one of a handful of routine problems, many of which you can check without a technician. Start with the thermostat, then move to the filter, pilot light, and flame sensor before assuming a major component failure.

Thermostat and Settings
Check whether the thermostat is set to HEAT and the fan is set to AUTO, not ON. If the fan runs continuously, it will push air through the system even when the heat exchanger is not hot, blowing room-temperature or cool air into the ducts. A low battery, incorrect temperature reading, or a recent programming change can also prevent the heater from calling for heat.
Dirty Filter and Airflow
A clogged filter restricts airflow so much that the heat exchanger overheats and the safety limit switch shuts off the burners. The blower keeps running, pushing air over the now-cool exchanger, which comes out cold. Replace disposable filters or clean reusable ones, and verify the blower compartment door is fully seated, since many units have a safety switch that disables operation if the door is ajar.
Pilot Light and Ignition Problems
On older furnaces, a extinguished pilot light means the burners will not light. Relight it following the manufacturer's instructions, and hold the reset button long enough for the thermocouple to sense the flame. If the pilot keeps going out, the thermocouple may be worn or positioned incorrectly. Newer systems use hot-surface or intermittent ignition, which can fail due to a bad control board, igniter, or gas valve.
Flame Sensor and Gas Supply
A dirty flame sensor causes the control board to shut off the gas valve after the initial ignition, so burners light briefly or not at all. Cleaning the sensor with fine-grit sandpaper often fixes this. Low gas pressure, a partially closed gas valve, or a tripped pressure switch can also stop the heater from producing warm air even if the blower works normally.
Ductwork and Condensate Issues
Leaky, disconnected, or heavily insulated return ducts in unconditioned spaces can draw in cold attic or crawlspace air, mixing it with the heated supply air. High-efficiency furnaces produce condensate that drains through a PVC pipe; a clogged drain line or full trap can trigger a safety shutdown that stops heating while the blower continues.
When to Call a Professional
If the filter is clean, the thermostat is correct, and the burners still will not stay lit, the problem is likely a faulty limit switch, control board, gas valve, or cracked heat exchanger. These repairs require a licensed technician and should not be delayed, because a cracked exchanger can allow combustion gases, including carbon monoxide, into the living space.
